- What plant the oil comes from
- What part of the plant the oil comes from
- The availability and health of the current supply of the plants
- How much actual plant material is needed
- Location of the farms
- Complexity of the harvesting process
- Complexity of the distillation process
- Labor costs
- Overhead of the company for things like warehouses, packaging, salaries, etc.

Here are a couple of great examples.

Thyme – Think about how little oil is extracted from each of those tiny, tiny leaves on the thyme sprigs. Thyme is about .16 per drop.

Frankincense – This oil is distilled from the resin of the Frankincense tree and it takes 8-10 years of tree growth before they can tap the resin. It is a laborious process. Frank is about .32 per drop.

Rose – It requires a whopping 60,000 rose petals to make one 5ml bottle of rose oil. And consider how hard it is to grow roses as well. They are very finicky. At $2.34 per drop, Rose is our most expensive oil.
