All Things CBD
#1 What is the difference between CBD and marijuana? Why is CBD important?

It’s not just a fad; it’s becoming a real staple in various communities around the world. In this class, you’ll get to see why! Don’t let all the scientific explanations overwhelm you. We want you to feel empowered in your knowledge of CBD and how you can utilize it within your health goals.

Please keep in mind that I am neither a doctor nor a scientist. I am not prescribing or advising in any professional capacity. I am seeking to share the knowledge that I have gained through research that you, too, can find. I strongly encourage you to continue to read and research yourself!

#2 What is CBD?

First and foremost CBD is NOT marijuana. They are both from the same plant, cannabis (hemp), but they are different varieties.

Marijuana is produced when the hemp plant is grown without the male variety present. The resin produced from the small, hairlike appendages (called trichomes) of all female plants is full of THC, which produces the psychoactive effects associated with Marijuana.

CBD (Cannibidiol) is a natural substance from another variety of hemp. It is produced when the hemp plant is grown with both the female and male plant. The resin produced is full of CBD, which does not contain the same heavy psychoactive effects as THC, and has only small amounts of THC.

#3 History of CBD

Why was CBD illegal? Is it bad?

CBD (Cannibidiol) is a natural substance from the hemp plant. Hemp originated in Asia and the Middle East thousands of years ago and has since spread world-wide. It showed up in the United States back in the 16th century. In fact, farmers used to be fined if a certain percentage of their production was not hemp plants because of how incredibly useful the plant can be. Hemp is used for paper, food, fiber, construction materials, clothes, and other products.

So what changed? In the 1920s, a negative media war was waged on Hemp/“Marijuana” due to financial (i.e., corrupt) reasons, and it was eventually deemed a Schedule 1 controlled substance. This category is for substances that have NO benefit and have a HIGH potential for abuse.

However, in July 2018, CBD was downgraded from a Schedule 1 controlled substance to a Schedule V controlled substance, meaning that it has SOME benefits and the potential for abuse is LOW. The FDA changed the category so that a drug containing CBD called Epidiolex could be sold. Funny how when a drug company wants something to be legal, they just get the law changed. =)

Finally, in December 2018, CBD went from a Schedule V controlled substance to an unscheduled substance due to the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which removed hemp (defined as cannabis with less than 0. 3% THC) as a controlled substance; this means that federal law made CBD LEGAL in all 50 states. Some states have their own regulations so it is important to know what the regulations are in your state. If you are in the military, there may still be very strict regulations, so please do your research.

#4 The Endocannabinoid System (ECS or EC System)

The Endocannabinoid System is a biological system composed of endocannabinoids, which are endogenous lipid-based retrograde neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 & CB2) and cannabinoid receptor proteins that are expressed throughout the vertebrate central nervous system (including the brain) and peripheral nervous system. Whoa. That’s a lot of big words! Ha!

In layman's terms, the ECS is linked to your central nervous and peripheral nervous system to help the body maintain homeostasis.

In a general sense, homeostasis refers to stability or balance in a system. It is the body's attempt to maintain a constant internal environment. Maintaining a stable internal environment requires constant monitoring and adjustments as conditions change.

If the body gets out of homeostasis, the ECS sends out natural endocannabinoids and enzymes to regulate the body and bring it back into homeostasis. For example:

  • When you get too hot, your ECS kicks into gear and you start to sweat to bring your body temperature down.
  • If you get too cold, you shiver.
  • When you get hungry, your stomach growls.
  • When you get tired, you yawn.

CBD primarily interacts with the ECS making it a highly sought after product through Young Living.

----//----

Take a second to think about your body's homeostasis. Do you feel like your body tells you what it needs and adjusts accordingly?

#5 THC vs. CBD

Now that you know what the ECS does, let’s take a look at the difference between THC and CBD in regards to the cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors are in the central nervous system (brain and nerves of the spinal cord).

CB2 receptors are found all over the body in the peripheral nervous system (nerves in your extremities), the digestive system, and specialized cells in the immune system.

THC acts on CB1 and CB2. When they attach to CB1 in the brain, it causes the intoxicating effects that are experienced with hashish, cannabis, and marijuana. It also affects the peripheral nervous system when it attaches to CB2, which is why some smoke marijuana to feel calmer or to decrease pain. It’s also why cancer patients receiving chemotherapy are prescribed medical marijuana; the effects on the digestive system help prevent nausea.

It is important to note that exposure to THC does have its risks, such as developing schizophrenia, failure of a drug test, or participation of illegal activity (based on your state’s legal position on the topic). Some people are genetically more sensitive to THC as well.

CBD does not bind directly to either of these receptors but instead impacts them indirectly by modifying the receptors' ability to bind to cannabinoids. These indirect actions include activating another receptor called TRPV1 which is an intrical part in the endocannabinoid system.

If you want a CBD isolate, then Nature’s Ultra through Young Living is one heck of a product and I highly recommend it for some more reasons I am about to cover!

----//----

That was pretty science-heavy but chock-full of goodness. What did you take away from it?

#6 Terpenes

Why are terpenes such a big deal?

Terpenes give plants their aroma. The fragrant imprint of each plant is a result of different combinations of terpenes.

Cannabis is unique in that each strain has a unique profile of terpenes. Terpenes are believed to have many positive effects on the body. These properties can act independently as well as in addition to what cannabinoids offer.

There are several known and studied terpenes that all exhibit different medicinal effects. Overall, terpenes contribute to the medicinal properties of cannabis - a phenomenon known as the “Entourage Effect”. Think of a team of players versus a single player; the team is the entourage effect of terpenes + Cannabinoids.

Now, where else have we heard of Terpenes? I’ll give you a hint… I love and use them daily.

Ding ding ding!! Essential Oils. Terpenes (with their multitudes of positive effects) are also found in essential oils.

#7  How to Choose Your CBD

There is certainly a bit of chaos when it comes to the availability of CBD products. There are so many to choose from. I mean, even the local gas stations sell them now! Obviously quality is an important factor. But it’s also important to know the difference between Full Spectrum CBD, Isolate CBD, and SMART Spectrum CBD.

Full Spectrum CBD still has some trace THC in it. So while you won’t get the psychogenic effects of straight THC (marijuana), there is still the possibility of exposure to THC.

It is also important to note that hemp is a phytoremediator by nature (phytoremediation is nature’s way of using living plants to clean the soil and groundwater) that absorbs chemicals and toxins from the soil. Traces of heavy metals absorbed from the soil may be left behind in a full spectrum product.

However, a lot of people gravitate toward full spectrum CBD because it still contains terpenes and many more compounds, thus it delivers the powerful Entourage Effect.

The other way to produce CBD is in its isolated form. CBD Isolate is pure CBD, and while it has 0% THC, no heavy metals or other compounds, it also has no terpenes in it and, therefore, loses the Entourage Effect.

Remember what else contains terpenes? Yes - essential oils! We can add them to the CBD to create a synergistic effect and thereby increase the benefits of CBD isolate! Nature’s Ultra has done just that! They have combined organic CBD isolate and terpenes to create an amazing SMART Spectrum CBD product for you.

#8 CBD Usage & Safety

CBD is labeled for topical use. First, clean the area and pat dry. Second, vigorously massage a generous amount topically into your skin. Don’t exacerbate the area but give it a firm rub. Apply a second or third time if needed.

Suggested places to apply:

  • Temples
  • Neck
  • Elbows, knees, and other joints
  • Wrists
  • Soles of your feet
  • Back of the heel/foot
  • Shoulders

If you are new or sensitive in nature, start with Natures Ultra’s regular strength CBD. You can even use ½ the recommended amount and increase it as you read your body and notice how you are feeling. Once you are more experienced you may want to try the extra strength products.

While this product is to be used topically I want you to keep a few things in mind in regards to CBD safety. CBD is broken down in the liver. This is done by the same enzymes that a lot of pharmaceutical drugs are broken down by. Therefore, it’s possible for your system to get a little overworked trying to break down too many things at once. We suggest that you consult with your physician when implementing a CBD product.

Now let’s dive into the different types of CBD available through Young Living and then I’ll let you know how to get them at wholesale pricing.

#10 CBD Joint & Muscle Balm, aka the workout buddy

This is my go-to when my shoulders start hurting from sitting at the computer for too long. I keep it in my desk drawer for easy access.

When you use CBD topically in the form of a rub, you can specifically target those sore, achy muscles. #11 CBD Oils

Nature’s Ultra currently offers three different CBD oil options - Cool Mint, Citrus, and Cinnamon. They are packaged in a convenient dropper bottle for easy use and are available in two strengths: 500 mg and 1000 mg.

  • Cool Mint CBD Oil, aka the work friend, contains Young Living Peppermint and Spearmint essential oils.
  • Citrus CBD Oil, aka the cheerleader, contains Young Living Grapefruit and Orange essential oils.
  • Cinnamon CBD Oil, aka the childhood bestie, contains Young Living Cinnamon Bark essential oil.

I was hosting three MAJOR events in less than three months and to say I was a bit stretched (and okay, really STRESSED) was an understatement! My Young Living CBD Muscle Rub and Citrus CBD Oil arrived and I was so busy, I just tucked the order away to deal with it later. That night, my shoulders and neck were on fire from too many hours on the computer, so I applied some of the muscle rub and the fire went to ash in a matter of minutes. The cooling sensation was immediate but the relief lingered all night.

The next day I was dreading what was in store for me, so I decided to try the Citrus CBD oil. I had never used CBD and didn't know what to expect. I cautiously took a small amount and found I had all-day energy and a feeling of happiness I had not experienced in a really long time. Now I always have a bottle of CBD oil in my refrigerator and a muscle rub on my nightstand.

I added the Calm Roll-on to my next order and it allows me to relax and unwind at the end of a long day.
