Detoxing is not just a buzz word. There are definitely health benefits for being aware of toxins and doing a cleanse, however, there is not much evidence to support infamous detox diets and programs. For our purposes, we will be using the word detox as a way to rid the body of toxins by making some lifestyle changes. I never recommend going on a diet (Ummmm, DIE is the first 3 letters of that word!) because rarely is a diet something that lasts long-term. I DO advocate for making lifestyle changes that are sustainable and help the body rid itself of toxins.
But, before we go any further, let me explain why toxins are so harmful to the body. Merriam-Webster defines toxic as follows: "containing or being poisonous material especially when capable of causing death or serious debilitation." Yikes! Some toxins are natural, meaning they occur in nature, but many toxins have been created by man out of convenience. The food industry adds preservatives to processed foods to improve their shelf life and prevent the food from spoiling, different shots have preservatives in order for them to be stored and transported easier, etc. In our desire to have it easier, we have unfortunately sacrificed so much in regards to our health.
Toxic chemicals may interfere with our body's hormones. Our hormones have many jobs in the body! Here's some information on products that can help your hormones.
And, here's a video I did a while back on toxins:
Some studies have shown a link between chemical toxins and obesity, concluding that our exposure to toxins has compromised the body's ability to regulate weight. Toxins are in an abundance in our environments, so I believe it is our responsibility as the gate-keepers of our homes to do our best to eliminate them inside our homes.
For some wellness tips, ingredients to avoid, and areas in your home to check for toxins, watch the video below.
