So, are essential oils all just hype or is there something actually beneficial about them? Cue eye rolls. Yeah, I know the feeling. There are so many crazy stories out there of essential oils curing things that we won't mention here, and people using them all.the.time for everything. It's easy to just blow them off and write those people off as "woo woo" or crazy. You're not alone if you have some reservations. Misinformation is rampant in our world, so that is totally understandable. There's also a bit of history with people practicing natural wellness being called witch doctors and then being killed, but I'll save that story for another time. Do I have your attention yet?
I love sharing information that I have found and personal experiences that I have had. So, check out this video and then keep reading if you'd like to learn more. Let's seek the truth before making decisions, especially when it comes to our health.
Let's dig a little deeper.......
Much of the misinformation and confusion comes from the way that essential oils are marketed. Coming from a consumer's standpoint, there are loads of claims and a bit of magic promises surrounding oils. This raises skepticism and rightfully so. So, let's set the record straight: essential oils come from plants. Plants have been used for hundreds of years as medicine, dating back as far as ancient Egypt. Plants were created by God to be used and appreciated. Just like you shouldn't pop a pill and think that all of your health problems will magically disappear, essential oils are not magical. They are tools to use, just like exercise, eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and regulating emotions.

Another issue adding to the eye-roll factor of essential oils is the plethora of claims about them curing anxiety or detoxing the body. Although these claims may be true for some people, each person is different and can have different reactions to the oils. There are so many factors to consider that play a part in our health. Each person has a specific genetic code, diet, exercise style, mental health, etc. So, blanket claims cause people to put up red flags and dismiss the potential benefits of essential oils. Our bodies were designed by a Wonderful Creator to heal and detox themselves. It's all about the environment. Just like cars can't run well on soda pop, our bodies are machines that need certain types of nourishment and care. These claims hurt the credibility of essential oils and sadly turn many people away. I'm hopeful, though, since you've taken the time to read so far, that you are willing to give them a chance!
Before we go any farther, I'd be remiss if I didn't stop to discuss a few important notes. First, just because something is natural doesn't mean that it is harmless. Just think about cigarettes and poison ivy. Some plants should be avoided for health and comfort! Essential oils are super concentrated plant compounds and although none will give you the reaction of poison ivy, there are a few that should not be applied directly to the skin. Hot oils such as cinnamon and oregano can cause some skin irritation if you drop them right onto the skin without a carrier oil like olive oil. This is called diluting. Also, one drop of an essential oil is sometimes enough. Start small with one or two drops and add more as needed or as desired. Check out a few more safety tips below:

The Science Behind Essential Oils
Essential Oils Defined
Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants using a process called distillation. They are highly concentrated. The beauty behind oils is that they can interact with the brain and the limbic system. You know how a certain smell can bring a flood of memories back? Essential oils bind to receptors in the nose, which sends signals to the limbic system in the brain. This smelling part of your brain is linked to memory and emotions. The essential oil molecules travel to the lungs and are absorbed by the body there, circulating throughout the body in minutes.
Essential oils can also enter the body through skin absorption when applying directly to your skin. Once in the body's circulation, the essential oils can reach every cell in your body within minutes.
Examples
Studies suggest that smelling essential oil compounds can release the feel-good neurotransmitters in the brain like serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. These can help your body relax, improve mood, reduce stress, and even help balance emotions.
One we use and love is Lavender essential oil. This essential oil has the chemical compounds linalool and linalyl acetate, which are known for their calming effects on the nervous system. This pairs well with bedtime or high-energy days when kids have been cooped up inside.
Another staple is Tea Tree essential oil. Its chemical compound terpinen-4-ol has been shown in studies to inhibit growth of certain bacteria and fungi, which is why Tea Tree is described as having antimicrobial activity.
Another commonly used essential oil is Peppermint. We use it almost every day! Peppermint contains menthol, which is known for producing a cooling sensation and can provide tension support. Peppermint is also used to help support feelings of alertness, which is why we use it for homeschooling on the regular!
Oils aren't magic. They're biochemistry — part of how God designed plants to function.
Common Mistakes with Essential Oils
One of the most destructive mistakes with essential oils is treating them like a magic bullet without changing your lifestyle. The body is very complex and deeply connected. Poor sleep, chronic stress, and eating processed foods will impact health in a negative way no matter what supports you use.
Essential oils work best when added to an already supportive lifestyle, not used to compensate. Pairing oils with proper sleep, stress management, nourishing food, and a strong support system can enhance what your body is already working to do.
Other common mistakes include using too much essential oil, skipping carrier oils, and attempting to replace medical care with oils.
Starting with a few drops of essential oils is best because they are so concentrated. You can always add more if needed. Some essential oils are hot and may cause skin irritation if applied undiluted. Carrier oils are fatty oils like olive oil, almond oil, and coconut oil. They help to dilute the essential oil, which slows down the absorption rate and reduces the risk of irritation. If you apply an oil and it feels too intense, applying a carrier oil on top can help soothe the area.
Finally, essential oils should never replace appropriate medical care. While they can be an important part of a natural wellness approach, traditional medical care is essential for emergencies, serious injuries, infections, and conditions such as broken bones. Essential oils are best viewed as a supportive tool—one piece of a much larger health picture.

Practical Ways to Use Essential Oils
Environment: Emotions
Scents are deeply connected with the brain and that is part of God's design. They impact our memory. In a matter of seconds, the scent of an essential oil can get right to the limbic part of the brain, which controls emotions, memory, and mood. For this reason, smelling the oil directly from the bottle can affect how you feel instantly. Certain smells can help with calmness, trigger a memory, lift your mood, or even help you relax for bed. The smells in our homes matter, and if they are synthetic, they are probably causing more harm that you realize.
Choosing to diffuse essential oils for bedtime, smelling them when feeling overwhelmed, or adding to epsom salts in a bath can really make a difference on the overall well-being of your home. We can’t control every moment of family life, but we can nurture environments that point our hearts toward calm, rest, and the goodness of God.
Environment: Home
Let's chat about swaps. I'm not saying that you should completely redo your life overnight. That's not sustainable. I would encourage you to make some small changes over a period of time. Just like with changing the kinds of food you eat, or transitioning into a different season of life, change is hard. This is not going to be easy, but it is possible!
If all of this is new to you, the first major change I would make is to swap diffusers for scented candles, waxes, or pluggins. Your family should not be breathing in synthetic chemicals just so the home smells good. Those fake scents are linked to hormone disruption, respiratory issues, and much worse. Pitch them and grab a diffuser with a few essential oils that you like. The best and most economical way to do that is to grab a bundle. Here is one with lots of options. Or here is another one with some great oils for diffusing.
The second swap I would recommend is tossing out your current cleaners and replacing with Thieves concentrated cleaner. You can stretch this cleaning solution so far and it smells amazing! We use this plant-based cleaner to literally clean our entire home. Simple. Effective. Toxin-free. Add it to your order or check out all of these lovely Thieves products.
Sometimes it's easiest to just add some essential oils to a diffuser to encourage moments of bliss in the home. Moods change, the air is cleaner, and your body picks up on that vibe. Here are some easy and timely blends that you can try. It's always fun to experiment too with scents that you like.
A Biblical Framework for Natural Remedies
When talking about essential oils, it helps to step back and look at what Scripture says about creation itself.
In the Book of Genesis, God repeatedly calls His creation good. The earth, plants, animals, and finally humanity were all intentionally designed by Him.
One interesting detail in the creation account is that plants were created before humans. God filled the earth with vegetation before placing Adam and Eve in the garden. Provision existed before people even arrived.
For example, Book of Psalm 104:14 speaks of God causing plants to grow for human use, and Book of Ezekiel 47:12 describes leaves used for healing.
This doesn’t mean plants are magical. It simply shows that usefulness was built into creation.
Christians are called to steward creation, not worship it.
When it comes to natural living, people often fall into two extremes:
-
Dismissing creation — assuming natural things are useless
-
Worshiping creation — treating natural remedies like miracles
But both miss the point.
Creation is good, but it is not God.
Essential oils are not magic. They are not cure-alls. And they are definitely not saviors. They are simply concentrated plant compounds from the plants God created.
They are tools — tools that can support wellness and help replace harsher products in the home when used wisely. When we keep that perspective, essential oils move out of the realm of hype and into something much healthier:
Thoughtful stewardship of God’s creation.

So, are Essential Oils all Hype?
Essential oils tend to feel “woo woo” when they’re marketed like magic cures, used irresponsibly, or treated as a replacement for wisdom and discernment. When hype takes over, it’s easy for people to become skeptical. But that’s not the only way to approach them. Essential oils become far less mysterious when they’re used with understanding, viewed simply as plant chemistry, and integrated into normal, healthy rhythms of daily life. From a biblical perspective, they can also be seen as part of the good design God built into creation. In that light, essential oils aren’t mystical solutions or miracle fixes—they’re simply tools derived from plants that can be used thoughtfully and responsibly in a home that values stewardship and wisdom.
