Sneaky Toxins & How To Detect them . . .

. . . Let's FACE it . . .no pun intended!   What if we could SEE the toxins we are putting on our face?

It is believed that our skin (our largest organ) absorbs 60-70% of the topical products we use. Within 20 minutes of applying anything to your skin - it will be in your bloodstream. So, it only makes sense if we want to live healthier lives, we would care about what products we put on our skin.   Right?

In the wake of my mom being diagnosed with ovarian cancer I began to do my own research on removing toxins from my life.  I was shocked to learn that in 1976 the TSCA (Toxic Substance Control Act) grandfathered in an estimated 65,000-100,000 chemicals that are currently on the market today – many of which have known carcinogens and other toxic chemicals. Under the TSCA, manufacturers are protected by trade secret laws that allow them to keep their ingredient lists a secret even though they may have known cancer risks.

Dr. Epstein, chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition notes that it is ‘unthinkable that women would knowingly inflict such exposures on their infants, children, and family if products routinely used were labeled with explicit warnings of cancer risks”.  Unfortunately, even reading disclosed ingredient labels to try and avoid toxic ingredients can be overwhelming as ingredients can be hidden in words like “fragrance” or falsely marketed as “natural” or “pure” if they contain at least 2% of something “natural” or “pure”.     :-(

SNEAKY TOXINS & HOW TO DETECT THEM in the ingredients list:

Mineral  Oil – aka: liquidum paraffinum, paraffin oil, paraffin wax, petroleum jelly, and petrolatum. What is it – why we don't want it?  a derivative of petroleum that clogs pores, prevents skin from releasing toxins, and leads to skin cancer after prolonged exposure.  Inhalation causes respiratory distress.  Where you'll find it:  petroleum jelly, shampoo, lotion, and baby oil.

Phthalates – What is it – why we don't want it? a chemical that makes plastics flexible.  It interferes with hormone production, and mimics estrogen when absorbed.  Where you will find it: plastic food packaging, lotions, cleaners, nail polish, and glues.

Parabens – aka: methyl, ethyl, butyl . . .  What it is & why we don't want it:  a 1996 study biopsied 20 breast cancer tumors and found parabens present in the tissue of each.  Previously, it had been believed that paraben chemicals were excreted from the body.  The conclusion by Professor Philippa Darbe: ‘their detection in human breast tumors is a concern as parabens have been shown to mimic the action of the female hormone estrogen.  Where you will find it:  cosmetics, bath & body products, shampoos & conditioners.

Urea – aka: diazolindyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea. What it is & why we don't want it:  a preservative created from ammonia & carbon dioxide.  Synthetic urea releases formaldehyde (a KNOWN carcinogen).
Where you will find it: cosmetics, commercial fertilizer, bath & body products, face wash, skin serums, body spray

“Fragrance” –  What it is & why we don't want it – it is an undisclosed collection of ingredients that houses hundreds of toxic chemicals. Short term toxicity includes coughing, skin irritation, headaches, nausea, and irritability.  Long term toxicity includes cancer, lung disease, heart disease, and reproductive complications.  Where you will find it:  scented candles, perfumes, lotions, fragrance oils, body sprays, shampoos, conditioner, hair spray, and cosmetics.

Ceteareth-20 – What it is & why we don't want it – it has been found to have carcinogenic properties & even low doses can cause skin irritation.

Where you will find it: lotions, conditioner, skin cleansers, & baby wipes.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate – What is it & why we don't want it – Commercially used as engine degreaser.  Known effects may include: skin irritation or rash, teeth damage, endocrine disruption, hair loss, cataracts, mouth ulcers, respiratory tract/eye/oral toxicity, headaches, nausea, coughing, and congestion.  Where you will find it:  shampoos, toothpaste, mouthwash, hand creams, lotions, cleansers.

Scarier than halloween how many HIDDEN ingredients and cheap, toxic, synthetic ingredients are lurking in many name brand products in stores today!
THIS is why I was so excited to find skincare, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, deodorant, makeup & a complete product line for my overall hygiene that I could use without concern for what was hiding in the ingredient list & why I started sharing with others!

I am so thankful that I don't have to spend hours standing in the drugstore or  health food store every time I want to buy a personal hygiene or beauty product - trying to decipher and scrutinize the list of ingredients to see if there are any sneaky toxins included.
