Dusting Spray
![]()
This DIY dusting spray is SO easy to make. It’s just 3 ingredients plus water. Pour into a bottle and shake. What could be easier than that?!
And even better, it’s a natural, non-toxic cleaner that actually works!
- cuts through dust, dirt, grease and grime
- helps repel dust (I love this! It means I don’t need to dust as often and still have clean, dust-free furniture and baseboards)
- cleans and disinfects
- eliminates fingerprints
- clean finish (no sticky residue)
But it’s not harsh. It’s a gentle cleaner that doesn’t damage the finish of my furniture. In fact, it actually improves the finish on my wood furniture. It nourishes, moisturizes and conditions wood and leaves a protective barrier with a subtle luxurious shine.
The Ingredients:
- 1/2 Cup Vinegar
- Vinegar is a fantastic natural cleaner.
- It disinfects, deodorizes, and easily cuts through dirt, grease and grime.
- 1/4 Cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
- FCO attracts and picks up dust, helping to trap dust and dirt on your cleaning cloth.
- FCO is also great for moisturizing and conditioning your wooden furniture as it easily sinks into wood and creates a protective barrier on the wood surface.
- It helps leave furniture and baseboards with a subtle, beautiful shine.
- And unlike other carrier oils, FCO never goes bad, doesn’t have a scent, and doesn’t leave a sticky residue- making it the perfect carrier oil choice for this dusting spray!
- 30 Drops Essential Oil
- Not only do essential oils smell great, they are powerhouse natural cleaners.
- Citrus essential oils (like Lemon, Orange, and Grapefruit) are excellent degreasers and cut through dirt, grime, and buildup on furniture.
- Tea Tree, Lavender, Cinnamon Bark and other essential oils are also great non-toxic cleaners with antibacterial, antiviral, and deodorizing properties.
- You can keep it simple and just use one essential oil (does anything smell better than a room freshly cleaned with a homemade natural lemon dusting spray?!)
- Or you can get creative and blend several essential oils together for your own custom scented dusting spray. I share several recipes for my favorite blends below. Make your own to match your mood.
- 1 Cup Distilled Water
- Water dilutes dusting spray and makes it easier to clean with.
- Using distilled water helps the mixture last longer, but you can substitute boiled and cooled filtered tap water instead if you don’t have distilled water.
OK..., lets get started
- First, start with 1 cup of Distilled Water
- if you don’t have distilled water, boil and cool some filtered tap water (like from your fridge).
- Next, choose a 16 oz spray bottle that’s made from materials safe to use with diluted essential oils. Glass, stainless steel, and certain types of plastic (plastic #1 HDPE or plastic #2 PET) work well.
- Pour the water into the spray bottle
- Add 1/2 cup White Vinegar
- Add 1/4 cup Carrier Oil (prefer Fractionated Coconut Oil)
- If you don’t have fractionated coconut oil, substitute with sweet almond oil or olive oil. Those also work well.
- Add 30 drops of your preferred Essential Oil
- I usually use citrus essential oils (like lemon, orange, or grapefruit). They have a great fresh scent, antiviral and antibacterial properties, and they do a great job of cutting through any dirt and grime on my furniture.
- You can also combine essential oils to make a custom dusting spray in a scent you love.
Here are a few recipes to try:
- fresh home: 20 drops lemon + 10 drops lavender
- citrus grove: 15 drops orange + 10 drops lemon + 5 drops grapefruit
- clean & fresh: 20 drops lemon + 10 drops peppermint
- clean & calm: 20 drops orange + 10 drops lavender
- cozy fall: 20 drops orange + 5 drops cinnamon bark + 3 drops cardamom + 2 drops clove
How To Use:
- Shake well before and during use
- keep in mind that water and oil don’t mix, so you need to shake the mixture frequently while dusting to help emulsify the oil with the water and vinegar
- lightly mist furniture or spray on cloth
- a little goes a long way
- wipe clean with microfiber cloth
Be sure to add a label to your spray bottle so you'll remember what you have in the bottle! You can find some really cute, free, printable labels online, or if you're creative, create your own. I use Avery.com to create my labels, and print them on Glossy labels from Avery so that they look nice and last longer.
FURNITURE POLISH
![]()
Store-bought wood polishes and cleaners can dull furniture over time and leave a haze on the wood’s surface. That’s because many of them contain silicone. Every time you clean with a silicone-based polish, you add another layer over furniture. Over time, dust and dirt gets trapped in these silicone layers and a haze builds up, dulling the wood’s finish.
Unlike store-bought polishes, this homemade orange oil furniture polish doesn’t build up. You can safely use it week in and week out, and wood just gets more beautiful with each use. It safely restores luster and shine, preventing wood from drying out and becoming brittle.
And it couldn’t be simpler to make. It’s just 4 ingredients and it only takes seconds to make.
The Ingredients:
- Olive Oil
- Olive oil attracts and picks up dust, helping to trap dust and dirt on your cleaning cloth.
- It’s also great for moisturizing and conditioning your wooden furniture as it easily sinks into wood and creates a protective barrier on the wood surface.
- It helps leave furniture and baseboards with a subtle, beautiful shine.
- And unlike some other carrier oils, olive oil has a long shelf life and doesn’t leave a sticky residue- making it the perfect carrier oil choice for this furniture polish!
- Vinegar
- Vinegar is a fantastic natural cleaner.
- It disinfects, deodorizes, and easily cuts through dirt, grease and grime.
- Vegetable Glycerin
- Vegetable glycerin is a humectant, so it attracts moisture. That helps make wood shine and helps keep it shiny longer.
- Orange Essential Oil
- Not only does orange essential oil smell great, it’s a powerhouse natural cleaner. It’s an excellent degreaser and cuts through dirt, grime, and buildup on furniture.
Ok..., lets get started
- Choose a 16oz Spray Bottle
- remember to use a spray bottle that’s made from materials safe to use with diluted essential oils (glass or stainless steel are best)
- using a funnel makes it really easy to add ingredients to a spray bottle.
- Add 1 1/4 Cups of Olive Oil to the Spray Bottle
- Add 25 Drops of Orange Essential Oil
- Add 2 Tablespoons of Vegetable Glycerin
- Add 1/2 Cup White Vinegar
- Put the Spray Top on the Bottle and shake well.
Remember to add a label
How to use:
- Use for wood cabinets, tables, chairs, bookcases, stair railings, and other wood surfaces
- Do NOT use on unfinished or unsealed wood surfaces
- No need to pre-clean surfaces before using this furniture polish.
- Not only is it a wood polish, it’s also a wood cleaner and dusting spray, too.
- Shake well before each use
- Spray on wood surface or onto lint-free cloth for light polishing
- Wipe with cleaning cloth until surface is dry and shiny
- Always rub in the direction of the wood grain. You should see furniture start to regain its luster almost immediately.
- tip: As with any cleaner, spot test in an inconspicuous area before using to make sure that it works well for your wood.
