DIY Hair Pomade Recipe for Men

DIY Hair Pomade Recipe

My husband loves this DIY hair pomade because it's non greasy, all natural and doesn’t irritate his scalp, and most importantly- it works! This product does not dry stiff in the hair, its flexible and perfect for short hair when you want to add a little style. He’s been using this recipe for about 3 years. One small jar lasts many months, so I now only make about 4 ounces at a time. Remember, its all natural with no added preservatives, so use it within 3-6 months of making it.

Young Living recently released an awesome how-to video with a recipe here:

I follow YL's recipe almost exactly; I use Arrowroot powder in place of the Corn Starch (I personally prefer using arrowroot powder and feel it’s a bit “better” for you, but corn starch is much easier to find). I also add 15 drops Cedarwood and 15 drops Northern Lights Black Spruce essential oils to the recipe.

DIY HAIR POMADE RECIPE – MAKES APPROX. 4 OUNCES.

  • 2 tbsp beeswax pellets. I prefer white pellets and ordered these- White Beeswax Pellets
  • 3 tbsp Shea Butter. I use Shea Moisture 100% Raw Shea - Shea Moisture 100% Shea Butter
  • 2 tbsp Jojoba Oil. I personally like Leven Rose brand- Leven Rose Jojoba Oil
  • 1 tbsp Arrowroot Powder. I got mine from local Amish Bulk Foods Store but you can find it online or in specialty sections at grocery stores- or get it here - Arrowroot Powder
  • 15 drops Cedarwood + 15 drops Northern Lights Black Spruce. (Young Living – ORDER NOW )
Step 1- In a double boiler, melt beeswax pellets and shea butter. Remove from heat and allow to cool for a few minutes.

Remove from the heat when it looks like this:

Step 2- Add Jojoba oil and Arrowroot Powder to the cooling mixture.

Wait a few minutes for it to cool slightly before adding the essential oils. **This step is very important because essential oils have a flashpoint and will evaporate in high heat. I wait until I can comfortably touch the side of the Pyrex glass and before the mixture starts to turn to a solid before adding the essential oils.

FINAL STEPS:

Using a hand mixer (I got this one for Christmas and it's great for this! Shop Now), beat on low until it starts to form into the consistency of “pudding”.

Pour into desired containers.
I personally use ( 1 ) Vivaplex 2oz Cosmetic container (for ease when my husband travels) order them here: Vivaplex Cosmetic White Container
Or if you prefer glass, these are a great choice: Vivaplex 12, 2 oz clear glass jars

I add the remaining product to ( 1 ) glass jam jar because it's the easiest container for my husband to use. This amount only fills jam jar about ½ full.

Wait until it cools completely before adding the lids..

Only a pea-size amount is needed when applying to hair.  This will not harden in hair, but it is pliable and is ideal for short hair.   The amount shown in this recipe lasts him several months with daily use.
I also use glass containers when I make these.  This is a brand I have used because they offer great quality products.  I find the 2oz jars are a better choice for this recipe.  Vivaplex 12 clear 2 oz glass jars
