14 Ways To Say “No”

14 Ways To Say “No”

Hey Friend!

It’s August already and we are still in coronavirus mode, but my school is gearing up for a hopeful year. One thing I find as I get back into the swing of things, is being overwhelmed because I can never say “no” to anyone. So, I am diffusing some Peace and Calming, and am looking into some advise.

I found some great tips!

  1. Say it. “No.” Don't beat around the bush or offer weak excuses or hem and haw. This only provides an opening for the other person. Don't delay or stall either. Provide a brief explanation if you feel you need to; however, don't feel compelled. The less said the better.
  2. Be assertive and courteous. "I'm sorry I can't right now but will let you know when and if I can." This approach is polite, and puts you in a position of power by changing the dynamic. You're taking charge, telling people you'll let them know when and if you can.
  3. “I’m sorry, but right now, I cannot give this project the time and attention that it deserves.”
  4. I’m not the best person to help on this.
  5. Right now is not a good time for me.
  6. I’d love to do this but....
  7. Let me think about this and get back to you.
  8. “It’s just a “no” for today.”
  9. ”Your (thing) sounds so fun. I wish I could commit, but I can't. (This resource) may help you with (planning/telling others). Good luck."
  10. "I phrase it along the lines of ‘I just don't have the margin for that right now.’”
  11. Give parameters. For example at your children's school tell them I can volunteer on Thursdays, but only on Thursdays.
  12. "Let me ask my husband about that first." Such wise advice because we think we can do it all! Husbands are truly wonderful at helping sort through the schedule and understanding your capacity and that of your family. It puts you on the same page and you work together better as a team. Plus, when I go back and tell someone that you have talked about it and it's not a good time for your family, they have a harder time insisting that you commit.
  13. If at a meeting and they are looking for volunteers -- it happens at every single meeting -- keep your mouth shut, pass the sign-up sheet to the next person and take a deep breath until the urge to say yes passes. You know you do your share and by not always volunteering you give others the opportunity to get the satisfaction of giving back and contributing to your community.
  14. If it's something you are interested in but just can't take the time right now then say, "Unfortunately I can't right now, but I hope to be more free in ___. Please feel free to call on me then if you need help.”

Be selfish.

Put your needs first. Not those of the person asking you for something. If you prioritize that person's needs over yours, you'll find your productivity will suffer and resentment will mount.

"The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say no to almost everything." Warren Buffett

So, how do you say “no?”

Tell me in the comments. I love your advise!

Blessings ~ Nancy
