Seasonal Allergies Support

It’s that time of year when I get flooded with questions asking advice for natural support for seasonal allergy relief.

I am super fortunate to not be part of the nearly 8% of Americans who suffer from seasonal allergies, but I know of, and have helped, MANY who are. This blog is a compilation of what they have found relief with.

I also need to point out there has been no documented CURE for allergies, only symptoms support, and of course, that I am not a doctor and you should seek care from one as necessary.

Now that we got that out of the way and we're best friends, let's talk about why you're reading this.

Natural ways to find relief.

Drs. LeAnne and David Deardeuff state that 90% of their patients see total relief from seasonal discomforts with an extensive liver cleansing protocol they use in their book.

A combo of essential oils that is a favorite among Young Living’s 6 million members and growing. Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint. We used to have a catchy name for this recipe, but FDA made us change it, so now it is known as the “LLP Bomb”.

You can diffuse this combo, make a roller of it and apply to chest and sinuses, or put it in a capsule to take internally.

To diffuse: add equal parts each to your diffuser, start with 3 drops and adjust to your liking.

Roller: This is the best option for kids to do-it-themselves. Mine like to apply their own oils, so I tend to go the roller route for them. For kids, 3 drops each in a 10 mL roller or even a 5mL empty oil bottle with roller fitment, then topped with carrier oil is usually fine. You can always make it stronger or weaker as needed, and reduce the peppermint for babies younger than 12 months old. For adults you can start with this same ratio and adjust to your liking. You can even use it neat (undiluted) if you like.

Capsules: Using essential oils internally is kind of controversial, but this is only because the quality of essential oils from brand-to-brand is so different and essentially unrecognized by the people who make these decisions, yet there are no standards for labeling quality. Therefore, unless you can actually visit the farms and distillery to KNOW EXACTLY where your oil was made and KNOW without a doubt that there were no pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or other agricultural chemicals used in the farming OR distilling process, and you can be CERTAIN without a doubt that there are no FILLERS in your oil (they can still be labeled 100% pure and have as much as 95% be filler btw) I would avoid using the oil altogether, not just internally. This is because if you are inhaling the oils OR applying them to your skin, these contaminants would be entering your blood stream just the same as if you ingest them. And in fact, ingesting them is slightly safer because they have to go through the filtering system of the liver to be metabolized by the body. This is why I preach and preach and preach, and will continue to preach and preach about using Young Living essential oils ONLY, whether you are applying them topically, inhaling them, or ingesting them. The next formality I need to cover is that when talking about ingesting essential oils, we are required to suggest the Vitality™ label that Young Living carries because the FDA won’t recognize a topical use product as a dietary supplement, so YL created a separate label to pacify them. It is the same oils inside the bottles of Vitality labels and regular labels. (pro tip for ya there)

Young Living is the only company that has gone above and beyond following FDA standards to do this by the way….which speaks volumes more about their integrity as a company than the other guys.

So when making said capsule of “LLP Bomb”…you simply take an empty veggie capsule, add Vitality™ oils, start with 3 drops each of lavender, lemon, and peppermint VITALITY™ oils, put a bit of extra virgin coconut oil in it, close the capsule and take it.

I like to take essential oil capsules with some form of milk instead of water because if you spill any oil on the outside of the capsule (which you will) while making them the water intensifies the oil and it can be unpleasant. Using milk also helps you to not “burp up” the oil or taste it on your breath. The coconut oil also helps this as well as allowing the essential oils to stick in the system a bit longer while being a vehicle to get the essential oils INTO the cell....that's why it's called a carrier.

You can take these capsules as often as you feel the need. They should take effect within 20 minutes and last around 2-3 hours.

Let’s break down the function of the oils shall we?

Lavender has been shown in studies to be a natural histamine inhibitor. 

Lemon and other citrus oils have been shown to liquefy and thin mucus to support drainage.  

Peppermint has been shown to relax smooth muscle tissue, which results in opening of airways and relaxes a heavy chest. 

If more inflammatory support is needed adding Copaiba to this combination is a great idea!

Internal Support!

Did you know allergies are not a normal response in a healthy human? While there are a wide array of causes to allergies like vaccinations and environmental exposures, many of the root causes for people are simply lack of enzymes, vitamins, and/or minerals. Since these are things we CAN control…let’s talk about them.

Enzymes. The link to supplementing enzymes for allergy relief comes from gut health and healing leaky gut. Leaky gut is well-known to be the root cause of many allergies. So logically, a focus on gut health would be beneficial to the seasonal allergy sufferer. I have an entire blog or video on what I’ve done to improve gut health. But a simple place to start with would just be including Allerzyme™ to your routine. The capsules are really small, but if you are unable to swallow capsules you can break them open and mix it in a smoothie or yogurt or a spoonful of raw honey.
